DiskNoice

DiskNoice started as a small side project after I realised I missed the sound of old hard drives. My MacBook Pro is incredibly fast, but it's also completely silent.

What it does

DiskNoice plays subtle hard drive click sounds based on disk activity. Nothing flashy, just enough to make your Mac feel a little more alive.

The basics

  • Start, pause, and stop controls
  • Volume control
  • Runs locally, no tracking

Want to try it?

Download the Mac app from GitLab Releases, move DiskNoice to Applications, and launch it from Finder.

/Applications/DiskNoice.app

Also, as a tiny bonus side quest, there is an experimental Linux CLI build: v0.1.0-alpha.2. It is small, terminal-shaped, and has its own Linux README.

Small notes

  • Requires macOS 13 or later.
  • Works on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.
  • DiskNoice does not collect data, send analytics, connect to external services, or require an account.
  • License is still TBD for now.
